Young and Emerging Scholars on Grotowski

Y.E.S.! Young and Emerging Scholars on Grotowski and The Workcenter

Sponsored by the Lab on Polish Culture Abroad, Institute of Polish Studies, Jagiellonian University, Kraków

Legendary theatre director Jerzy Grotowski evaded easy definition, never stopped developing, and continues to overflow reductive boundaries. The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards (est. 1986) still does bold, experimental work. Many people have found, and still find wonder in Grotowski’s work, words, and provocations. Still more enjoy profound encounters with the Workcenter. Yet many who draw upon these influences and draw close to this legacy meet resistance. License to invoke Grotowski and the Workcenter is selective and contested. The discourse feels policed, with a chilling effect on intercultural and intergenerational discourse on Grotowski’s work and living legacy.

In efforts to overcome cultural and generational divides, Y.E.S.! invites young and emerging scholars of Grotowski and the Workcenter to play, to ask unsettling questions, and to open up new access points to Grotowski and his legacy to scholars, to artists, and to the public.

Inspired by the work of scholars Darek Kosiński, Wanda Świątkowska, and Kris Salata, as well as developments in activities at the Workcenter since 2007, two projects are taking form under the auspices of Jagiellonian University’s Lab on Polish Culture Abroad: What is there NOT to say about Grotowski TODAY?! and Workcenter Encounters as Entry-Points. For each project a Cohort will meet online over the next year (2021-2022), with tentative plans to meet in person in October/November 2022.

We propose a course of 4 online Cohort Gatherings over the next 12 months: collaborations, and cross-pollinating conversations to inspire provocative re-imaginations of Grotowski’s and the Workcenter’s relevance today. Our Cohort Gatherings aim to give young and emerging scholars a way to meet with one another and ‘play’ without ‘Gatekeepers’ present. Together, we can see what discursive tables we can flip over in response to the pressing issues of our era, exploring scholarly connections between Grotowski, the Workcenter, and the political and ethical questions of our ‘world in crisis.’

We encourage participants to overflow the boundaries of ‘proper’ analysis, ‘formal’ convention, and regiments of ‘approval.’ We hope to generate ample space and time to encounter one another, find and follow ‘rabbit holes,’ and to support one another’s emerging work on Grotowski and the Workcenter.

Apply by August 15 // 1st Virtual Meeting Mid-September
